Comic development

After reading the story for the first time I decided to get down my initial ideas for how I could layout the comic. In particular I enjoy the idea of having an unconventional comic that has things coming out of the boxes etc... I think this would work quite nicely especially with the insects because it would be really gruesome to have cockroaches/spiders coming out of the boxes

The interesting part about planning this comic is thinking about how I can incorporate the metaphors of the story into a comic clearly. I think its key to create a visual for the metaphor rather than to just write it in a text box and have decided that I want to have a side by side of the metaphor and the actual event in the comic.

Page 1
  • I am trying to reflect the Greek Urn style in the comic I think it would be really aesthetic to have a black text box rather than the generic white one.
  • Wine red ocean = literally a red splash like a wine spill with Whales swimming through it
Page 2
  • Hand reaching pitch black sky - black background with hand reaching up
  • Image box below with the hand as the main image
  • Spiders in the corner

Page 3
  • Spiders hanging preparing to go to sleep. The box should be long and portrait in order to exaggerate the hanging. Above I visually experimented with the idea of a horizontal box but that doesn't have the same effect and it makes the spider look less dynamic, instead it just looks like an aerial view of a spider lying down.
  • I like the idea of having angular boxes that cut through diagonally rather than just generic box shapes.
  • I also began planning what a spider could look like and enjoyed the idea of it having intricate markings along its back and even having gaps on the legs to highlight the pattern.
  • Having only the two colours of the black and orange might also be really aesthetic and bold like the Greek Urns.

  • This metaphor is the one that I am struggling with the most because I am not sure how I want to visually portray the dogs eating the meat.
  • I would definitely haft to portray the spiders along side it in order to have it make more sense.
  • I have also roughly mocked up some potential box layouts to help me design the final outcome
  • I also liked the idea of white on black for this part of the comic to add a bit more contrast against the orange pages as the comic might need some relief from those sections.
  • This page will be one that I get a feel for more practically when it comes to making it.
Page 5
  • More hand imagery
  • Researching what Pedipalps are
  • Incorporating the web pattern as a new aesthetic in the story
Page 6
  • Splash page
  • Face to face meeting of the two armies
  • Aerial view of the two armies lining up to fight one another
  • This will be hopefully the most aesthetic page and ill be focusing on the details on the spiders and cockroaches
Page 7
  • To reflect the bloodshed of the battle I think I will make this page red
  • making the spider orange so they stand out against the red and against the cockroaches that will be black
  • This page will also act like a splash page with little to no typical comic boxes on it
Page 8
  • Solution to the window imagery: I didn't want to take away from the flat nature of the comic but then through researching found that the window could be made up of many small comic boxes to make a window pane aesthetic.
  • I really like the solution because the window blends into the aesthetic of the comic
  • I wanted to bring the comic round full circle so thought that the red wine sea of the whales and the blood of the cockroaches could be done in a similar red splash style.

In Design - Editing

In Design I have added all the pages of my comic to Indesign in order to see if the layout remains effective when the pages are put against ...
